Chow campaign accused of ‘misleading’ mailer, being probed by Skokie/Evanston School District 65

The Illinois Education Association has sent a letter to a candidate for state representative in the 17th District telling her to stop using a mailer the group says insinuates it endorsed her, something the group did not do.

The letter from the IEA says that the materials from the campaign for Candance Chow, who is running in the crowded Democratic primary, contains a “misleading reference” to the organization that might be misunderstood as an endorsement. The group has instead endorsed one of Chow’s opponents.

“By this communication, you are advised to cease and desist from using the name, logo or any other reference to the Illinois Education Association in your campaign advertising,” attorney James Nally wrote in a March 9 letter to the leaders of Friends of [Candance] Chow, one of the candidate’s campaign committees.

The mailer in question asks, “What do Laura Fine, Candance Chow and the Illinois Education Association all have in common? They all opposed cutting $830 million annually from public schools.”
